How to get licensed: Australia

Official procedure

  1. Choose Foundation, Standard or Advanced and arrange the free three-part exam with an ACMA-accredited assessor; pass theory, regulations and practical assessment. ACMA qualification route [7]
  2. After the assessor lodges a passing result, apply for an ACMA recognition certificate through ACMA Assist or the downloadable form and pay its fee. Certificate application guidance [7]
  3. Apply separately for a call sign; once qualified and assigned one, operate under the amateur class licence rather than an individual station licence. Call sign application [8]
Licensing authority
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
Cost
The accredited-assessor exam is free. Current ACMA fees are AUD 48 for the recognition certificate and AUD 32 for the next-available call sign, AUD 80 in total for those two applications. [9]
Processing time

Official timeframe: ACMA's usual timeframes are examination results within two weeks after assessor receipt, recognition certificate within 15 working days, and call sign within 10 working days; these are indicative and sequential steps may extend the total. [10]

No qualifying applicant report was found.

Additional requirements
  • The exam has theory, regulatory and practical parts; theory and regulations each need at least 70%, while an assessor judges practical competence. [7]
  • A recognised qualification is required for a call sign, and operation must follow the conditions of the amateur class licence. [8]

CEPT and visiting operators

This is not a CEPT member, but it implements T/R 61-01 for eligible visiting operators. Check the licence class and host rules; residents still follow the local licensing steps above. [6] [5]
